Ellerton Bungalow

Ellerton Bungalow Nawa Gurukelle, Doluwa Ellerton was built 100 years ago in the delightful, hilly centre of Sri Lanka just 45mins outside Kandy, the traditional seasonal escape route from the coastal humidity for colonial settlers and their families. The original Main House with its 2/3 spacious bedrooms has been joined, just 300 yds away, by newly built Valley House with a further 3 /4 bedrooms. Here hot sunny days and refreshingly cool evenings offer the best of the Island’s weather. The beautiful gardens are full of colourful flowers, birds and butterflies, a large kitchen garden area supplying vegetables and fruit for the table and an infinity edged swimming pool. As this is fed from the estate’s own bore hole it is almost chemical free. Main House has been preserved and refurbished to blend the charming colonial character with modern convenience. It is home to the English owners when in Sri Lanka so the style is relaxed, comfortable, “˜country house’. The large sitting room is furnished with antiques, oriental rugs and comfortable armchairs and sofas. Books and magazines are to hand and tv, music, games and cards. The dining room seats 12 and a library/study has international satellite tv for keeping up with world events. Valley House is near the swimming pool and as the name suggests has magnificent views for 20 miles or more down the valley, especially from the huge veranda where you may choose to have your meals, or simply relax with a book or your thoughts. All the rooms have high ceilings and overhead fans which is quite adequate for comfort in this hill country climate. Enquire Now Rooms Stay in beautifully designed private residences offering spacious bedrooms, modern bathrooms, and a peaceful setting. The key words are informality and flexibility. Western dishes and Sri Lankan curries are prepared by the resident chef using fresh produce from the gardens or nearby markets and most reasonable requests will be met with a smile. The Valley House has a fridge, microwave, toaster and tea and coffee making facilities for guests wishing to make their own breakfasts. Lunch and dinner is inclusive of drinks; fruit juices or local alcohol – beer, gin, whisky and mixers. Wines are not available in-house but you are welcome to bring your own to the table. Heritance Kandalama

Heritance Kandalama Heritance Kandalama PO Box 11, Dambulla, Luxury for the eco-traveller not wishing to ‘rough it’ in a mud hut. Tea Factory Hotel

Tea Factory Hotel Kandapola, Nuwara Eliya The exterior of this gem from the late British raj remains virtually unaltered since it was built by tea pluckers in the 1930’s. Its modular architecture and heavy window frontage stands proudly in the centre of Division 1 of a working tea estate. The central atrium and reception gives way to the original and operational lift shaft. Tea from the Hethersett factory was the first to fetch the highest price in the world for Silver tip tea from Ceylon. In 1891, Hethersett tea was auctioned in Mincing Lane, London, for £1.10s.6d, over 30 times the current average price of 1s lb pound of tea. This was an exciting achievement for a new tea factory. The 57 bedrooms fill the corridors around the perimeter, the best views across the hill country being enjoyed from the corner deluxe rooms. The interior has been converted into a comfortable yet unusual hotel with large lounge and dining areas. However the light seeps in, shining on the metal foundations. The tea Factory is about 30 minutes out of Nuwara Eliya sitting on one of the highest points of the tea country. The misty mountains clear between 10 am and 4pm, unveiling stunning views of the hill country and a haven for bird watchers. During the day you might wish to enjoy the pleasant walks or 18 hole golf course of Nuwara Eliya town. At Buddhist New Year and Christmas time the town and especially the Race Course are popular venues for local holiday makers and the atmosphere is buzzing. A large lawn to the front is an ideal spot for ‘early’ afternoon tea or socialising at the many weddings which choose a venue in the highlands. The nearby Heatherset Estate invites you to pluck your own tea leaves and have them processed in the hotel’s tea factory. A very different experience from the usual tea plantation bungalow and a quiet location for some R&R before indulging in more of Sri Lanka’s sights. Enquire Now Rooms Experience comfortable mountain accommodation with cosy interiors, traditional décor, and modern conveniences. Deluxe Corner Room Offering all the comforts of the standard rooms with the added benefit of enhanced hillside views, these spacious corner rooms provide a more scenic and elevated stay experience surrounded by the beauty of the mountains. Dining Most guests opt for half board as the perfect climate makes for excellent day trips to the hillside or Horton Plains. The main Kenmare restaurant offers Western and Eastern cuisine at breakfast, lunch and dinner .The buffet menu is most popular and offers a huge variety of dishes. The local fresh produce of vegetables and fruit is outstanding as the climate is perfect for the market gardeners all around. Poultry and meat are recommended dishes as the seafood tends to be less fresh than on the coast. The river fish is rather bland in flavour. Some may prefer to chose from the a la carte menu and indulge in a more intimate dining experience. 16 guests can board the static railway carriage and enjoy a taste of the Raj aboard the historic TCK6685. Retire to either of the two bars. The quiet library neighburing the Goatfell Bar is furnished with a pool table and is ideal for after dinner drinks and soft music. The larger Hethersett bar/lounge has an equally ‘English feel’ with wood panelled walls and bar but has a livelier atmosphere with occasional entertainment of ‘traditional’ Bingo, live jazz music and board games. The views from all the lounge and dining areas are wonderful by dayl but vanish by night due to the heavy mist. The interiors are created from the original packing and sifting rooms so the high ceilings allow noise to circulate around the factory engineering parts creating an exciting atmosphere. Things to do & local tips Hotel Recreation & Shopping Enjoy convenient on-site facilities including a fitness area, pool table, and a small shopping arcade for relaxed entertainment and holiday essentials. A reasonable selection of wines and cocktails is available from the bar. We dined on a wonderful sushi platter and grilled seafood. Dessert was a sharp lemon and ginger panacotta with strawberry and passion fruit coulis and almond flakes. Not surprisingly we didn’t have room for lunch but light snacks of prawn and mango salad with sweet chillie sauce and cocounut banana shrimp cerainly tempted the palette. Ayurveda Pavilions

Ayurveda Pavilions Porutota Road, Ethukale, Negombo Launched in 2004, this boutique-style retreat is set among the palm trees which fringe the narrow shoreline -‘the golden mile’ of Negombo. Designed for guests seeking ayurvedic therapy and relaxation in a quiet natural environment. There is no escaping the ambience of a luxury spa, with the contemporary design and artfully placed flower bowls beside every doorway – it is hardly surprising they were the 2003 winners of Travel Weekly’s World’s Best Spa. However, ayurveda is regarded very seriously here and the ‘spa’ concept rather frowned upon. The focus is on the Kur programme comprising diet, massage and detoxification. With only 12 luxurious bungalows, you should embrace the exclusive serenity and luxurious bathrooms that accompany your more discerning treatments. Special treatments range from a three-day cleansing and purifying programme through to 30-day progamme of Pachakarma which claims to eclipse established Western medicines. We found the treatments highly rejuvenating albeit a week’s stay is really required to maximise the ayurvedic effects. The effects are long lasting and the ultimate feeling of well being is often not fully appreciated until 3 months on. Surrounded by lush woodland and and swaying coconut palms, the ambience is soporific and when not dozing with a massage, one is escaping to the poolside deckbeds. Four resident Doctors and 16 therapists provide about 3 hours of treatment per day for each guest in the privacy of their own bungalow terrace. More specialised treatments are within the health centre. Hatha yoga classes twice weekly were our favourite moment as the mentors attempted to train our minds into meditation – not an easy task. In between treatments, guests may wish to catch the early fishermen pulling in their catch or mending their nets at sundown. The sunsets are quite magnificent. Dining The restaurant only serves Ayurvedic cuisine – fresh vegetables and fruits and ghee to replace usual fats. There is no cold room so all produce is bought daily. Much emphasis is placed on local cuisine – seafood, soups & salads, vegetarian foods and herbal teas, but the comprehensive a’ la carte menu serves all tastes. The programme promises relief from chronic conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, diabetes and obesity. Each guest will receive a bespoke menu in accordance with the doctor’s prescription. To help you understand the process, each dish is accompanied by a brief description of its contents, highlighting its remedial properties. I enjoyed a lunch of garlic soup followed by an array of delicious Sri Lankan curries and vegetables served on a ceramic plate within a woven basket. Coconut ice cream and raw coconut and fresh fruit was a wonderful cleanser before I returned for my next treatment. The evening meal was an even greater treat of grilled fish kebabs and vegetable moussaka. The amazing fact is that all this delicious food did not result in one extra pound gained in weight- “You are what you eat!” Morning yoga sessions are a great appetite stimulant for a breakfast of hoppers and Dhal, and fruit. Ayurveda cooking demonstrations are provided for those wishing to practise their new found ways back at home. Dining is in a central open air restaurant, overlooking the flood-lit pool and enjoying subtle lighting and waiter service. The dining room is quite quirky in design and a real respite from the holistic building. Alcohol is offered but not encouraged.
