Trinco Blu J699+75H Sampalthivu Post Uppuveli, Sarvodaya Rd, Trincomalee 83408 Trincomalee -on the north east coast of Sri Lanka is a place of soft white sand, turquoise blue waters, sperm whales and dolphins. Not for the faint hearted, it took us 6.5 hours to drive from Colombo via the picturesque Habarana route, some of it through thickly wooded areas -where you could see monkeys swaying on tipsy branches, some stretches uncomfortably pot holed. Trinco Blu has been renovated by local architect Channa Daswatte, a pupil of the famous Geoffrey Bawa. Bawa’s influence on Channa is very evident in the minimalist, chic retro style. White washed floors, walls and furniture mingle with blue denim cladding and bursts of bright orange to reflect white sands, sparkling blue ocean and the sunset orange that are Trinco’s highlights. One of the best resorts on the East Coast, Trinco Blu is located on the white sands of Uppuveli. Owned and managed by John Keells Hotels, Chaaya has 81 rooms -43 superior rooms, 36 beach chalets and 2 suites. We picked a chalet on the ground floor from where our verandah stretched out on the beach and the calm blue waters. Walking on the beach towards a spectacular sunset we could see Pigeon Island -famous for its vibrant coral life and exotic reef fish. An early morning start for a spot of snorkeling and then heading out to deep sea to catch a glimpse of the Sperm whales, Dolphins and Blue whales was on the cards. We had made sure to make it in the season, which extends from March to October, to increase our chances at spotting these magnificent creatures. There were two dining options; the main restaurant The Captains Deck and The Crab, the sea food restaurant. We picked the seafood one on the beach. The crabs were fresh and simply delicious. Sheer white curtains, crisp white cotton bedding; the white furniture and white washed walls created an immaculate, spacious and stylish haven. Each room has either a double bed or twin beds, lounge chairs, a work desk, AC, ceiling fan, Cable tv, IDD telephone, mini bar and tea and coffee facilities, hair dryer, room service and laundry service. All the ensuite bathrooms have hot water. Our room, like all the beach chalets had fluffy fresh bathrobes and slippers. We enjoyed the DVD player as we had taken a few of our favourite movies along. The two suites are spacious and have separate sitting areas that open out onto private balconies. Apart from all the features that the beach chalets have they also have bath tubs. The hotel is totally geared for water babies of all ages. The infinity pool is every pool lovers’ dream. The water sports center offers a challenge to the experienced, adventurous enthusiast but can accommodate beginners too. Sri Lankan rice and curries and BBQ’s are the standard half board. Upgrade to the a la carte for delicious seafood platters and fusion recipes. An all-day snack menu is available offering chicken satay sandwiches, coconut fried prawns in mango sauce, burgers and BLT’s. Breakfast is buffet style with a wide selection of Continental, English and Sri Lankan dishes. Breakfast is served early in preparation for safari excursions. Local and imported wines are available, but the specialty is the “Watering Holes” Arrack cocktail. Unravel the mysteries of Yala wildlife with a jeep safari. 3-31/2 hours in Block1 Yala with experienced guides and naturalists trained to locate camouflaged wildlife and identify every bird that passes by. 2hr night safaris through the buffer zone of the park will provide an insight to nocturnal wildlife. Heritage tours will explore two historic Buddhist monasteries Customised tours can be arranged for seasoned travellers in search of leopard trails, birdwatching and bear trails. These are dependent upon cubbing season and monsoon patterns. Safari season: Yala National Park closes in September to offer peaceful surroundings to mating wildlife. November is an excellent time to see the cubs after October rainfall. Katuragama is a 20 minute drive away and spiritual home to many pilgrims visiting the religious Boa tree and Gods of Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim beliefs Bundala Bird Sanctuary in Hambantota is a great half-day excursion. Trek or boat through the swamps to see the many crocodiles, kingfishers, flamingos etc and admire the bopping turtles on the seas edge. The South Coast villas or East Coast Plantation bungalows provide an excellent follow-on destination.

Villa Amandhira is in Thalpe, between the cities of Galle and Matara and within a very short distance to some of the best beaches on the island plus the Southern most tip of Sri Lanka, namely, Dondra. With its private setting of living, dining and play areas and 3 bed rooms, this villa is ideal for groups or families. In low season individual rooms might be able to be booked but in the recommendation is to book the whole Villa and enjoy the total experience. Villa Amandhira’s eco friendliness in structure, utilities, amenities and operations, was one of the most attractive points.The wood work, furniture and fittings; almost all made of reclaimed timbre, solar power for practically everything needing electrical current, rainwater and well water re-harvesting, recycling of waste, are just some of the eco friendly methods with which this villa operates. In contrast, the architecture and interior is surprisingly modern in its setting,.. White walls offset dark brown timber, patches of green and potted plants dotted inside and out, modern furniture with a hint of tradition in the base of a leg or tip of a bedpost, adorned with a wealth of Sri Lankan ornaments such as wall hangings, vases, lamps- the whole set up is very contemporary. Colours splatters the white canvas through a cushion, a flower, a table decor, creating a very lively atmosphere. We received a unique homely and cozy welcome upon arriving, with three smiling faces and hands joined in the traditional Sri Lankan gesture of Ayubowan. A refreshing welcome drink and the sentiment that this is only the beginning of warm hospitality. True to our thoughts, our whole stay was made memorable with the extremely attentive staff catering to our requirements with dedication and loyalty. The head chef’s delicious western and Sri Lankan cuisine, cooking demonstrations, and Sri Lankan traditional treats at tea time kept our anticipations high and expectations exceeded. One of their best features was permission to bring our own liquor which was a bliss since we were sure of having our favorite drink to wind down in the evenings without the hassle of choosing and ordering. With a natural reef pool right outside the perimeter, a pool within, and pristine beaches, coral reefs, scuba diving, whale watching and many water related sights and activities available all over the southern coastline, Villa Amandhira is perfectly situated with convenient access to all of it, and more. Habaraduwa House Habaraduwa House, Habaraduwa, Galle This villa in the south west is set in informal gardens which stretch down to the wide, soft beach, accessed through a private gate. The ensuite bathrooms with rain showers and bathtubs, the private lounge areas within the suites, the cozy verandah, and the game room were sufficient to make us want to spend our whole holiday within the premises and indulge in a glorious vacation. The “Z” spa services blended with our schedule so as not to miscount. The kitchen, whilst providing delicious gourmet meals, also gave us the opportunity for a culinary adventure in the form of cooking lessons with home-grown local herbs and vegetables. They even maintain their own tuk-tuk which taxi’s us to nearby places. Venturing out of the grounds, you will find the expanse of Sri Lanka’s beautiful pristine beaches, the deep blue Indian Ocean, many a historic church from the country’s colonial past, and the convenient highways connecting to the country’s capital, hill country and the cultural triangle. Dining All the meals were prepared with the finest of ingredients and it was amazing to find out that all the main herbs and vegetables are grown within the premises of The Wallawwa. We also had one of the most unique culinary experiences thanks to the chefs of The Wallawwa; a customized Sri Lankan cuisine demonstration. In this fun “cooking lesson” we learnt about the various spices and herb and vegetable combinations and had a personal tour of the garden by the chef/garden. We had our meals in the open verandah overlooking the gardens and we were told we could also opt for a personalized butler service in the privacy of our room or suite. With our plans for sight-seeing, early and late meals were on offer, as they are for late/early check-in’s and check-outs. The local flavors and succulent meat and vegetable combinations left us wanting more. The talented chefs of The Wallawwa really knew how to please our palettes.
