Boutique Sri Lanka (BSL)

Elephant Stable

A beautiful period bungalow overlooking Kandy, once home to Sir Cuda Ratwatte, the first Ceylonese nobleman to be knighted by the British. The only boutique hotel to be located so close to Kandy centre (15mins). Lovingly restored with a combination of Colonial furniture and chic interiors to provide an interesting yet luxurious experience. The friendly hosts combine professionally trained staff with local villagers. Whilst English can occasionally be a barrier for some, their smiles are more than welcoming. Elephant Stables welcomes families and has ample space and large gardens for the full privacy of all guests. Elephants were a regular sight in the late 1800’s and the manager can arrange for children to get close and play in the gardens with Menika, a young female elephant with a docile temperament. The tradiuonal Redaing Room showcases a magnificent collection of Henduwas (elephant training poles) Adults may be more impressed by the two colonial vehicles that are always parked out front, ready to whisk clients away on day excursions. Choose between and Austin a55, Austin a12, Mini Moke convertible and a Ford Prefect! The gardens are well tendered and a proud man he should be. Perfect lawns, ornamental ponds and a pool and outdoor bathing, sitting area, where drinks can be served all day. Sip cocktails under the Araliya tree and look onto Mahaweli river valley and knuckles mountain range on the horizon. The infinity pool is surrounded by sun loungers, fresh towels and a waiter. The magic on a hot day is to sprinkle on iced water from personal clay pots - service going the extra mile and much appreciated! The colonial living room is very spacious with modern sofas and historic artefacts. A 55” TV screen is the perfect movie house for the Owner’s collection of 100 favorite DVD’s, complete with classics shot in Ceylon of yesteryear. One of Sri Lanka’s finest!

Rooms

The hotel offers two categories of rooms

Dining

Indika, the head chef is an enthusiastic and experienced chef who prepares 2 set menus each day. However he is always happy to accommodate personal requests and dietary needs. Sadly the Room rates are on B&B basis only so costs can add up but if you are out in the day you may not want to take advantage of all of Chef’s delights. Breakfast is a full English, Continental or traditional Sri Lankan affair. Indika’s coconut pancakes are a personal favourite. Lunch is a la carte and can range from sandwiches, salads, pasta to full dinner should you wish. A 3 course dinner menu is available each evening and always includes a Sri Lankan Curry. Chilli strength can always be tempered for children. Set menus of Asian fusion or Western can be provided, as can Vegetarian options. With advance notice, head chef can also provide a special a la carte menu for a group banquet. Desserts can be quite sweet but are a Sri Lankan speciality, with Jaggery and Kithul honey very often the base ingredient. Fresh fruit can be a simpler option. Afternoon tea is served with fresh cakes and sandwiches from 3-6pm daily by the Mango Trees. You will here the Japanese Karp jumping in the nearby pond. Dining can be enjoyed in 5 locations: the Green dining room - Sir Ratwatte’s traditional breakfast room, the Bar area- ideal for family dining. Or opt for alfresco dining and admire the stars and fruit bats swoop majestically for fruit : the verandah, Garden dining around the candlelit poolside, and in the front garden before the mountain views. The juice bar will be popular with the kids as Nihal combines scrumptious fruits and mocktails for the exhausted traveller. Notch up a note in the evening for some of Nihals amazing cocktail creations.
