Ellerton Bungalow

Ellerton Bungalow Nawa Gurukelle, Doluwa Ellerton was built 100 years ago in the delightful, hilly centre of Sri Lanka just 45mins outside Kandy, the traditional seasonal escape route from the coastal humidity for colonial settlers and their families. The original Main House with its 2/3 spacious bedrooms has been joined, just 300 yds away, by newly built Valley House with a further 3 /4 bedrooms. Here hot sunny days and refreshingly cool evenings offer the best of the Island’s weather. The beautiful gardens are full of colourful flowers, birds and butterflies, a large kitchen garden area supplying vegetables and fruit for the table and an infinity edged swimming pool. As this is fed from the estate’s own bore hole it is almost chemical free. Main House has been preserved and refurbished to blend the charming colonial character with modern convenience. It is home to the English owners when in Sri Lanka so the style is relaxed, comfortable, “˜country house’. The large sitting room is furnished with antiques, oriental rugs and comfortable armchairs and sofas. Books and magazines are to hand and tv, music, games and cards. The dining room seats 12 and a library/study has international satellite tv for keeping up with world events. Valley House is near the swimming pool and as the name suggests has magnificent views for 20 miles or more down the valley, especially from the huge veranda where you may choose to have your meals, or simply relax with a book or your thoughts. All the rooms have high ceilings and overhead fans which is quite adequate for comfort in this hill country climate. The Last House, Mawella

The Last House, Mawella Nakulugamuwa, Tangalle Geoffrey Bawa’s final architectural gem set on a private enclave of Tangalle’s best beach. Aptly named, Mahawella-The Last House- is a large villa divided into a number of wings to offer privacy to friends and generations of family. The distressed-style blue window frames intersperse the Bawa signature-pillared verandahs. Cement floors and open cream-washed arches join rooms scattered with large glass or teak tables and temple wall hangings. Ornate, antique brass light fittings hang from the high ceilings and the cool air flows around the many Buddhist statues. The vast 2-acre gardens are contained neatly between the villa and the boundary wall with only a few coconut trees and items of garden furniture to mar the view to the ocean. The 10-metre pool is protected in the central courtyard, before the gate out to the blue ocean and your very own wide sandy beach. To the front, the bedrooms overlook a natural lake where resident herons and kingfishers target the fish circling the sea of purple lilies. Dining Eat when you like and what you fancy! ‘Ananda’, Mahawella’s highly trained chef, will gather your choice and style of food – fish, spicy, vegetarian – each morning and then practice his culinary skill throughout the day. Afternoon tea is a highlight – home-made cakes and cookies. For lunch we nibbled at tomato and basil brochette, with grilled peppers and prawn satay with a papaya sauce. We had breakfast in the garden, lunch on the garden terrace, so dinner was a sociable affair on the dining terrace, with delicate candles burning everywhere, catching the fire flies in the night air. The menu is comprehensive, for example- lobster, mango and cucumber salad, and a variety of pastas or grilled chicken with Moroccan spices and herbed vegetables. Ananda is an expert at zabaglione for that special occasion. Passion fruit brulee and traditional watalappan are favourites for many. Food is all charged to guests at cost price (average $15 per person per day) and the service is included in the villa tariff. Discretionary tips are welcomed but not sought. Wine, beer and spirits must be ordered in advance but a simple e-mail is sufficient. Bottled water and fresh fruit juices are kept in stock. Ayurveda Pavilions

Ayurveda Pavilions Porutota Road, Ethukale, Negombo Launched in 2004, this boutique-style retreat is set among the palm trees which fringe the narrow shoreline -‘the golden mile’ of Negombo. Designed for guests seeking ayurvedic therapy and relaxation in a quiet natural environment. There is no escaping the ambience of a luxury spa, with the contemporary design and artfully placed flower bowls beside every doorway – it is hardly surprising they were the 2003 winners of Travel Weekly’s World’s Best Spa. However, ayurveda is regarded very seriously here and the ‘spa’ concept rather frowned upon. The focus is on the Kur programme comprising diet, massage and detoxification. With only 12 luxurious bungalows, you should embrace the exclusive serenity and luxurious bathrooms that accompany your more discerning treatments. Special treatments range from a three-day cleansing and purifying programme through to 30-day progamme of Pachakarma which claims to eclipse established Western medicines. We found the treatments highly rejuvenating albeit a week’s stay is really required to maximise the ayurvedic effects. The effects are long lasting and the ultimate feeling of well being is often not fully appreciated until 3 months on. Surrounded by lush woodland and and swaying coconut palms, the ambience is soporific and when not dozing with a massage, one is escaping to the poolside deckbeds. Four resident Doctors and 16 therapists provide about 3 hours of treatment per day for each guest in the privacy of their own bungalow terrace. More specialised treatments are within the health centre. Hatha yoga classes twice weekly were our favourite moment as the mentors attempted to train our minds into meditation – not an easy task. In between treatments, guests may wish to catch the early fishermen pulling in their catch or mending their nets at sundown. The sunsets are quite magnificent. Dining The restaurant only serves Ayurvedic cuisine – fresh vegetables and fruits and ghee to replace usual fats. There is no cold room so all produce is bought daily. Much emphasis is placed on local cuisine – seafood, soups & salads, vegetarian foods and herbal teas, but the comprehensive a’ la carte menu serves all tastes. The programme promises relief from chronic conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, diabetes and obesity. Each guest will receive a bespoke menu in accordance with the doctor’s prescription. To help you understand the process, each dish is accompanied by a brief description of its contents, highlighting its remedial properties. I enjoyed a lunch of garlic soup followed by an array of delicious Sri Lankan curries and vegetables served on a ceramic plate within a woven basket. Coconut ice cream and raw coconut and fresh fruit was a wonderful cleanser before I returned for my next treatment. The evening meal was an even greater treat of grilled fish kebabs and vegetable moussaka. The amazing fact is that all this delicious food did not result in one extra pound gained in weight- “You are what you eat!” Morning yoga sessions are a great appetite stimulant for a breakfast of hoppers and Dhal, and fruit. Ayurveda cooking demonstrations are provided for those wishing to practise their new found ways back at home. Dining is in a central open air restaurant, overlooking the flood-lit pool and enjoying subtle lighting and waiter service. The dining room is quite quirky in design and a real respite from the holistic building. Alcohol is offered but not encouraged. Ihe prestigious Saman Villa. lies on the periphery where the coconut plantation gradually runs into beach. The suites are split level with a sitting room to the front opening onto the brightly cushioned balcony. Polished Kumak floors and new teak furniture create a very homely feel. Motorised blinds allow you to watch the sun set and decide when it’s time for bed. A large flat screen TV and DVD/CD system may lull you to sleep on those lethargic days (there are heaps of CD’s in the library). Remote control air-conditioning or an over head fan can be operated from the bedside. Floating jasmine in water pots add scent to every room and your feet as you wash off the sand. Step up to the bedroom onto a sea grass carpet, where the huge bed takes centre stage draped with beautiful hand painted cotton covers. Push through saloon doors to the large walk-in dressing room linking the ensuite bathroom, with its marble vanity area and natural stone surround, to the open-air showers. Enjoy the impeccable service on the main restaurant terrace or neighbouring sunset bar providing an international cuisine for guests seeking a little company with their fellows. Guests wishing to celebrate a special, romantic occasion will be impressed by the many locations that the manager has created for that special dinner a deux. Served by your personal butler, you can listen to the waves on the rocks, watch the sea ripple onto the beach below or relax under the stars in the garden pavilion, cushioned on day beds. My favourite was the flood-lit pool pavilion on the crest of the cliff. It is hard to imagine ever eating again after breakfast at Saman. They have the widest selection of menus from American through ‘slim and trim’ to Saman Brunch. The fresh pastries were divine. If you need a pick-me-up at lunchtime, the croque monsieur or Thai chicken salad will do the trick. Or go Sri Lankan and explore the flavours of the many curries and rice. The spa menu is not restricted to those in treatment and the Tuna Tatare with Tatsiki is highly recommended. The master chef has fresh produce brought in daily and the seafood selection is superb. We dined on home smoked fillet of Silver Modha on a crispy salad, with a BBQ of jumbo prawns oriental style and grain fed Australian steak to follow. As we lay on our daybed contemplating the day’s visit to the Brief Gardens, we spared a moment to devour caramelised lychee and pistachio with coconut ice cream.! The wine is equally inspiring and well priced. Wedding Packages The traditional Sri Lankan Wedding is performed on a decorated canopied dais(Poruwa). The bride and bridegroom are dressed in ceremonial Sri Lankan costumes. Jayamangala stanzas of blessings are sung by young girls. Dancers to the beating of drums make the ceremony colorful. The ceremony can be tailor made to suite the couple. Things to do & local tips The hotel facilities include a full gymnasium, table tennis and badminton. Diving Saman Villa

Dining All the meals were prepared with the finest of ingredients and it was amazing to find out that all the main herbs and vegetables are grown within the premises of The Wallawwa. We also had one of the most unique culinary experiences thanks to the chefs of The Wallawwa; a customized Sri Lankan cuisine demonstration. In this fun “cooking lesson” we learnt about the various spices and herb and vegetable combinations and had a personal tour of the garden by the chef/garden. We had our meals in the open verandah overlooking the gardens and we were told we could also opt for a personalized butler service in the privacy of our room or suite. With our plans for sight-seeing, early and late meals were on offer, as they are for late/early check-in’s and check-outs. The local flavors and succulent meat and vegetable combinations left us wanting more. The talented chefs of The Wallawwa really knew how to please our palettes.
