A reasonable selection of wines and cocktails is available from the bar. We dined on a wonderful sushi platter and grilled seafood. This minimalistic structure welcomed us, adorned with cement sculptures and vessels giving it a very modern and chic feel. The fact that we were in one of the driest zones of the country was soon forgotten as lush green trees, monkeys and squirrels kept us entertained. The view of the lake birds in flight and the spectacular sun set custom ordered, or so it felt, were ideal for us. Acquired and built over four acres of land under the inspiration of renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate has since been acquired and lavishedwith the same love and attention to detail, afforded to the guests. Ayurveda Pavilions

Ayurveda Pavilions Porutota Road, Ethukale, Negombo Launched in 2004, this boutique-style retreat is set among the palm trees which fringe the narrow shoreline -‘the golden mile’ of Negombo. Designed for guests seeking ayurvedic therapy and relaxation in a quiet natural environment. There is no escaping the ambience of a luxury spa, with the contemporary design and artfully placed flower bowls beside every doorway – it is hardly surprising they were the 2003 winners of Travel Weekly’s World’s Best Spa. However, ayurveda is regarded very seriously here and the ‘spa’ concept rather frowned upon. The focus is on the Kur programme comprising diet, massage and detoxification. With only 12 luxurious bungalows, you should embrace the exclusive serenity and luxurious bathrooms that accompany your more discerning treatments. Special treatments range from a three-day cleansing and purifying programme through to 30-day progamme of Pachakarma which claims to eclipse established Western medicines. We found the treatments highly rejuvenating albeit a week’s stay is really required to maximise the ayurvedic effects. The effects are long lasting and the ultimate feeling of well being is often not fully appreciated until 3 months on. Surrounded by lush woodland and and swaying coconut palms, the ambience is soporific and when not dozing with a massage, one is escaping to the poolside deckbeds. Four resident Doctors and 16 therapists provide about 3 hours of treatment per day for each guest in the privacy of their own bungalow terrace. More specialised treatments are within the health centre. Hatha yoga classes twice weekly were our favourite moment as the mentors attempted to train our minds into meditation – not an easy task. In between treatments, guests may wish to catch the early fishermen pulling in their catch or mending their nets at sundown. The sunsets are quite magnificent. The programme promises relief from chronic conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, diabetes and obesity. Each guest will receive a bespoke menu in accordance with the doctor’s prescription. To help you understand the process, each dish is accompanied by a brief description of its contents, highlighting its remedial properties. I enjoyed a lunch of garlic soup followed by an array of delicious Sri Lankan curries and vegetables served on a ceramic plate within a woven basket. Coconut ice cream and raw coconut and fresh fruit was a wonderful cleanser before I returned for my next treatment. The evening meal was an even greater treat of grilled fish kebabs and vegetable moussaka. The amazing fact is that all this delicious food did not result in one extra pound gained in weight- “You are what you eat!” Morning yoga sessions are a great appetite stimulant for a breakfast of hoppers and Dhal, and fruit. Ayurveda cooking demonstrations are provided for those wishing to practise their new found ways back at home. Dining is in a central open air restaurant, overlooking the flood-lit pool and enjoying subtle lighting and waiter service. The dining room is quite quirky in design and a real respite from the holistic building. Alcohol is offered but not encouraged. Served by your personal butler, you can listen to the waves on the rocks, watch the sea ripple onto the beach below or relax under the stars in the garden pavilion, cushioned on day beds. My favourite was the flood-lit pool pavilion on the crest of the cliff. It is hard to imagine ever eating again after breakfast at Saman. They have the widest selection of menus from American through ‘slim and trim’ to Saman Brunch. The fresh pastries were divine. If you need a pick-me-up at lunchtime, the croque monsieur or Thai chicken salad will do the trick. Or go Sri Lankan and explore the flavours of the many curries and rice. The spa menu is not restricted to those in treatment and the Tuna Tatare with Tatsiki is highly recommended. The master chef has fresh produce brought in daily and the seafood selection is superb. We dined on home smoked fillet of Silver Modha on a crispy salad, with a BBQ of jumbo prawns oriental style and grain fed Australian steak to follow. As we lay on our daybed contemplating the day’s visit to the Brief Gardens, we spared a moment to devour caramelised lychee and pistachio with coconut ice cream.! The wine is equally inspiring and well priced. Wedding Packages The traditional Sri Lankan Wedding is performed on a decorated canopied dais(Poruwa). Trinco Blu

Trinco Blu J699+75H Sampalthivu Post Uppuveli, Sarvodaya Rd, Trincomalee 83408 Trincomalee -on the north east coast of Sri Lanka is a place of soft white sand, turquoise blue waters, sperm whales and dolphins. Not for the faint hearted, it took us 6.5 hours to drive from Colombo via the picturesque Habarana route, some of it through thickly wooded areas -where you could see monkeys swaying on tipsy branches, some stretches uncomfortably pot holed. Trinco Blu has been renovated by local architect Channa Daswatte, a pupil of the famous Geoffrey Bawa. Bawa’s influence on Channa is very evident in the minimalist, chic retro style. White washed floors, walls and furniture mingle with blue denim cladding and bursts of bright orange to reflect white sands, sparkling blue ocean and the sunset orange that are Trinco’s highlights. One of the best resorts on the East Coast, Trinco Blu is located on the white sands of Uppuveli. Owned and managed by John Keells Hotels, Chaaya has 81 rooms -43 superior rooms, 36 beach chalets and 2 suites. We picked a chalet on the ground floor from where our verandah stretched out on the beach and the calm blue waters. Walking on the beach towards a spectacular sunset we could see Pigeon Island -famous for its vibrant coral life and exotic reef fish. An early morning start for a spot of snorkeling and then heading out to deep sea to catch a glimpse of the Sperm whales, Dolphins and Blue whales was on the cards. We had made sure to make it in the season, which extends from March to October, to increase our chances at spotting these magnificent creatures. There were two dining options; the main restaurant The Captains Deck and The Crab, the sea food restaurant. We picked the seafood one on the beach. The crabs were fresh and simply delicious. We chose a beach chalet. The view was incredible. The chalets are constructed in units of four, two on top, two beneath. All the rooms have been designed to have either a private balcony or a verandah. As we opted for the ground floor we gained the beach as our extended verandah. Sitting on the soft sand early morning was such pure pleasure. We also loved the blue and white mosaic bed head. The lighting was low key, making bed time reading tiresome. Sheer white curtains, crisp white cotton bedding; the white furniture and white washed walls created an immaculate, spacious and stylish haven. Each room has either a double bed or twin beds, lounge chairs, a work desk, AC, ceiling fan, Cable tv, IDD telephone, mini bar and tea and coffee facilities, hair dryer, room service and laundry service. All the ensuite bathrooms have hot water. Our room, like all the beach chalets had fluffy fresh bathrobes and slippers. We enjoyed the DVD player as we had taken a few of our favourite movies along. The two suites are spacious and have separate sitting areas that open out onto private balconies. Apart from all the features that the beach chalets have they also have bath tubs. The hotel is totally geared for water babies of all ages. The infinity pool is every pool lovers’ dream. The water sports center offers a challenge to the experienced, adventurous enthusiast but can accommodate beginners too. There is also a gym and play area for the children. 43 superior rooms, 36 beach chalets and two suites make up the Chaaya accommodation alternatives. 43 superior rooms, 36 beach chalets and two suites make up the Chaaya accommodation alternatives. The Captains Deck serves a Sri Lankan and International buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food sometimes lacks flavour possibly catering for a milder European palate, but the breakfast table is really something to look forward to. The two bars are well stocked and offer alcohol, non alcoholic beverages and delicious fresh fruit juices. The thick fresh pineapple is a personal favourite. The Crab – the specialty seafood restaurant, is located on the beach and is an open air beach hut where your feet sink into soft Trinco Blu
