Galle Fort also known as Galu Kotuwa in Sinhalese was built in 1588 and fortified further in the 17th Century by the Dutch. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument. The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Centre was launched in 1978. Of the 7 species of endangered Sea Turtles, 5 of the species can be seen off the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka where they come to lay their eggs. The villagers in the area began to collect these eggs and sell them in the open market. The Conservation was project was launched to protect these magnificent creatures due to this. If you’re lucky you may even get the chance to be a part of the baby turtles being put back into the sea at a specific age.
